I just spoke with a Border Officer who stated that to bring a vehicle across the border and import it, that a letter or stickers need to state it passes EPA and DOT standards. He also stated that any vehicle that was manufactured in Canada or the U.S. does not require duty to be paid

Duties and taxes are two different things.

I had my POE at Queenston-Lewiston on 9/24 and it went really smoothly - my car import was a success with my Hyundai!

First off you have to tell them you want to import the car or they would've just let me go. I handed them the Hyundai compliance letter and they had an issue with it saying it was only compliant with Canadian safety standards, which we knew was unacceptable anyways, but I played it cool and said I brought the letter anyways because it states that there are no recalls on the car. He seemed to like that. And then I said I actually have a sticker on that car that says No Adjustments Required (which as far as I'm aware only applies to the EPA part of the paperwork) but the guy nodded his head and said OK and stamped everything once I filled it out. The second checkbox on the DOT form was marked (the one that says the car has the required manufacturer stickers). He did NOT check the car. I couldn't believe it! My car was made in Korea but I did NOT have to pay duty - he just put a big fat zero in that spot. I didn't even have to pay an import fee. So it was a success at the border for import! I will update again when I head out to title/register my car what happens then - my fiancé says that NJ don't do safety inspections so I'm assuming I'll be good to go, except for paying the taxes lol. Good luck everyone.
