Washington (AFP) - The US Justice Department said Friday it arrested an Islamic State sympathizer who was plotting to carry out a suicide bomb attack on a US military base in Kansas.

John T. Booker Jr, 20, is charged with "attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction... attempting to damage property by means of an explosive and one count of attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant," the Justice Department said.

Booker was arrested earlier Friday near the Kansas city of Manhattan "as he made his final preparations for his planned assault" on nearby Fort Riley, the US Attorney for Kansas, Barry Grissom, told reporters in Kansas City.

Glad they caught this dude before he killed people.

"Unbeknownst to him, the materials that were used to make up this bomb were inert," said Grissom, who added that Booker would appear Friday in US Federal Court.

And this guy isn't the only one - there was another one taken into custody just yesterday. Also not in NY.

Wisconsin man accused of trying to join ISIS

MADISON, Wis. -- A Wisconsin man accused of traveling to the Middle East in a failed attempt to join the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, has been ordered held without bond.

Thirty-four-year-old Joshua Van Haften made his first court appearance Thursday in Madison one day after being arrested at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago. A newly unsealed criminal complaint charges Van Haften with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization.

The complaint says Van Haften talked to friends about his plans and flew to Istanbul last August. But it says he was unable to cross the border into Syria.

U.S. Attorney John Vaudreil called Van Haften is a flight risk.

Van Haften's lawyer, Joseph Bugni, said he looks forward to "having all the facts brought to light."

Kansas man accused of plotting to detonate bomb at Fort Riley military base
A 20-year-old Kansas man plotted to kill American soldiers with a vehicle bomb at the Fort Riley military base, an attack he planned to carry out on behalf of the ISIS terror group, prosecutors announced Friday.
John T. Booker, also known as Mohammed Abdullah Hassan, was arrested as part of a lengthy FBI investigation. Federal authorities said he was arrested near the army base in Manhattan, Kansas, as he completed final preparations to detonate the bomb, which had, in fact, been rendered inert while he was under FBI surveillance.
“As alleged in the complaint, John Booker attempted to attack U.S. military personnel on U.S. soil purportedly in the name of (ISIS)," said Assistant Attorney General John Carlin. "Thanks to the efforts of the law enforcement community, we were able to safely disrupt this threat to the brave men and women who serve our country. Protecting American lives by identifying and bringing to justice those who wish to harm U.S. citizens remains the National Security Division's number one priority."
