Because we're conditioned to think violence is the answer. Guns at the OK corral at noon, going out in a blaze of glory. That type of nonsense. We condemn acts of terror, but want to see folks killed on pay per view. Effectively becoming what we hate...

Isn't it death unless the murderer is forgiven by the closest family member of the victim? I remember a case in the last year or so where the woman forgave the murderer of her son while he had the rope around his neck. She took the noose off and slapped him across the face. He got life in prison instead. It was a very courageous act on her part. She said him dying wouldn't bring her son back and there would be two,grieving mothers instead of one.
