Caffeine is banned to LDS folks. Being caught drinking coffee by someone who might report it to a bishop could have your faith questioned. So they don't want people to catch them with coffee in case someone reports it to a bishop. I found, when looking for articles on people being expelled for losing their faith, a case wherein a young man and a young lady broke the celibacy policy in the code of conduct. She was expelled and she discovered that every time she and her boyfriend had sex, he immediately went and told his bishop and asked for help. Being reported to the bishops is a very real fear for these people.

The rule is to do with mind altering substances. Mormons must treat their body as a temple and not take mind altering substances--no alcohol, no caffeine, etc. I'm unsure of what that means for things like psychiatric medications as an official verdict, but I do know that many mormons stigmatize people taking psychiatric medications, though I am also uncertain of the extent of this.

You'll also find that among them there is a broad spectrum of adherence to those esoteric rules. I've known some who are very strict, and others who hold a much looser interpretation in their personal lives. Some won't touch caffeine, some won't hesitate to down a beer...
