Hi! My fiancée arrived march 4th. We are now ready to marry, but he left his original birth certificate at POE in JFK! We need it to get marriage license! Any advice???

I don't think you would be able to get it back. You can contact lost and found in JFK for help. You need passport to get married, not birth certificate. But you will need it for AOS.

The file that you delivered at your POE is their file that likely contains your original document(s). It is generally recommended that you submit only copies during your immigration processes. Bring the original documents to the interview for comparison by the IO if requested: http://www.uscis.gov/forms/file-my-application-online-e-filing/submitting-supporting-documentation

To get original documents returned: http://www.uscis.gov/g-884

Good luck on your immigration journey.

I thought he meant he forgot to get it back from officer after showing it.

OP: Did you mean brown envelope?

Restudy marriage license requirements, i feel you have missed something massive.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

We dis not know of this, so when he handed jfk his Manila envelope at his POE it contained his original birth certificate!

I figured they would just mail it to us but now I tho k I have to fetch it. Hmmmm I see the link above to request original documents back. Is that the only way? How long does that take? Thanks

You do not get any of the documents back that were in the envelope. They are sent to the USCIS.

Get another one from your country, or try and get it back through requesting it from the USCIS. It is important never to give originals. When you file for AOS, make sure to send copies only of all your important documents.

You should not need a birth certificate to get a marriage license. The non-resident alien should be able to show their passport.

Hi thank you all so much for the helpful information.

Darnell...I saw the link you gave me for Chester county and I don't see that it asked for a birth certificate anywhere on there.do you think that I could just get a marriage license in Chester County with a passport only from him?

.I'm asking because our wedding is supposed to be April 6 I did not realize he was supposed to give his photocopy at point of of entry.I really appreciate your help thanks!!

So I live in Philadelphia . It says here if u don't have Social security number then he need a birth certificate. Chester county doesn't specify that.

And to the other question he said at his interview in Senegal he gave his certificate original, unaware that it wouldn't be returned.

No :(

we have a photocopy in Africa that could be faxed, but I'm sure he needs original :(

Sucks I wish I would have known all this

I was hoping it was different county by county and that Chester would be more lenient than philadelphia abs I could just drove there.

Will be sad to call off wedding my parents are very involved in the process they are going to be sad too. Geez, hope this doesn't affect his AOS
