The correct way to do it and not risk import duty is to fill out a long customs form declaring your duty free unaccompanied goods as an immigrant. A complete inventory, copy of your visa and the customs form would be with the boxes. Many ship DHL, FedEx, mail, etc with no forms and they fly under the radar and get by, but there is a dollar limit on what a general mailing can contain without incurring duty. Think about when you enter the country and have junk you need to write down with a value on a customs form. Get unlimited dollar amounts of your personal possessions by using your immigrant credentials and the proper customs form.

Good luck I guess it depends on what you're moving, furniture or small stuff.. I had a great experience just doing it myself. But I had no couches or anything

We packed as much as we could in luggage, and paid the fees to take on the airplane. It depends on what you are bringing as well. I have shipped third rate with USPS from Germany, but you cannot say it is from yourself to yourself. It took about a month to receive the boxes.
