California tops other states in job growth

For years, business lobbyists complained about what they derided as "job killer" laws that drive employers out of California.

Rival state governors, notably former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, made highly publicized visits to the Golden State in hopes of poaching jobs.

But new numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics tell a different story. Total jobs created in the 12 months ending Jan. 31 show California leading other states. California gained 498,000 new jobs, almost 30% more than the Lone Star State's total of 392,900 for the same period.

Florida came in third with 274,100 new jobs, followed by New York with 157,700 and Georgia with 131,900.

"These data explain why so many governors are coming to California in search of jobs," said Stephen Levy, director of the Center for the Continuing Study of the California Economy in Palo Alto. "The state has just set records," he noted in terms of its share of venture capital funding, exports, tourism and tech growth.

Though solid expansion continued in the tech-heavy San Francisco Bay Area, the latest figures reflected an unforeseen jump in Southern California employment.

Preliminary totals for new jobs in the Los Angeles Basin were raised by 109,900 for the year ending in January. The biggest jumps were 58,200 for the Los Angeles metropolitan area and 34,800 for the Inland Empire. Tourism, international trade, development of a regional tech sector and an uptick in construction contributed to the Southern California boomlet, Levy said.

The leap in job creation shows that California is a leader in the global economy, said Kish Rajan, director of the Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development. "While other states continue to chase us," he said, "we're chasing our California-sized ambitions."

The most important thing to note here is that all across the land jobs are being created at an incredible pace. A pace which we have not seen since the 1990's. Which comes to show that it pays a dividend to have a Democrat in the White House. Just imagine if Congress or many of the individual states had not blocked every measure that was guaranteed to spur job growth - this would be 1990's all over again. But even with all that obstruction, we're doing better than at any point between Jan 2001 and Jan 2009.

Considering the complete road block republicans have thrown up since they've had a means to do so in congress, one might also be able to argue that job growth is possible despite an utterly worthless and petty government. Just sayin'

Either way, we do know for sure that Obamacare is not the job killer that our Republican friends propagandized it would be.

I have read on many nursing forums that RN have been having a hard time finding work, and new grads are going out of state to find work.

Doesn't seem much has changed from the reports I have seen the last few years........

I don't live far from the epicenter and I suspect the whole thing may go up in flames one of these days, but then someone comes up with some innovative idea and we're all riding high again... If anything, boring it isn't!

On a positive note, a majority of jobs being created in California are real jobs paying real wages and we still have a lot to recover from the Governator's legacy...

I feel like Facebook will be the company to start the crash. Its probably a little ways out still.

All I know is that housing costs alone in the area are making things unsustainable.

Real estate prices are beyond ridiculous... Even in the East Bay prices are astronomical.

We gave up temporarily on buying about 2 years ago. I'm in the East Bay and people who used to live in the City are being displaced which knocks up East Bay costs. BART can't really handle all the new commuters either. My wife takes it and its standing room only despite the fact she gets on the second or third stop of her line.

True... I remember when nobody wanted to live in Hayward...
