SS Card after AOS

Hi,

Once I have the green card after AOS, what happens to my social security (SS) card (it is written on it: "not allowed to work without DHS authorization") should I ask a new SS card without this written on it, or should I keep the old one and show the green card?

The Officer at our interview said "You'll want to go back to the SSA and request a new card. This one will not have the restriction on it and you'll never need another one." [Obviously, if you change your name, you'll need a new card.]

I am a naturalized citizen and have had the "Valid for Employment only with Authorization" printed on my SS card for the last 10 or so years. To be honest, I don't ever remember having to show an SS card to anyone. It's the number that's important.

Having said that however, since I'm applying for I-130 for my wife, I figured if there's some weird situation where it might be asked in the future, I called the SSA (number from ssa.gov) and used the automated tool to request an S-5 form (replace a lost card) to be sent to me. I am guessing that one will not have those words printed on it, because that was a longgg time ago.

My brother on the other hand simply went to a local SS admin office and he got a new card that day. He had to show proof (green card was enough)

You are not obligated to change your SS card, but it certainly makes sense to do so A card without restrictions looks much nicer

I went to SSA office last week and were told that they will only change your card if you need to change name etc. but they will not remove the annotation unless you are a US citizen.

You should have asked to speak to the supervisor - permanent residents are eligible for an unrestricted card. Some SSA employees may not know that...

Thanks to everybody for your answers, if I get another card, I guess that the SSN number will not change, am I right? (sorry I am very new in the USA)

No, this is your number for life It won't ever change.
