Thanks NigeriaorBust. I have every intention of using the available window(s). That is why I was asking whether I can go ahead and apply for insurance immediately upon arrival or if I would need to wait for the SSN to arrive first.

Makes life easier but not required

Hi Kaptan, it was just a normal purchase, we did research, rang them up and enrolled on the phone. They said we could start a new plan or leave this one on a months' notice - it does not tie you in for the year.

Truly though, as a UK person, I took me a good two days to understand what on earth this co=pay and deductible stuff was for....!

Hi Lauren and Kevin,

Our move date is approaching (July) and I have finally found some time to do some proper research on health insurance. I wanted to contact you again because it looks like we will also be living in NJ, at least initially. You had said you bought BCBS NJ EPO, are you happy with your plan? It's just that I have read so many horror stories about Horizon BCBS that I wanted to find out how your experience was now that you have had the plan for a while.

The other thing that's strange to me is that everybody talks about going to a broker and being shown a variety of plans, but who are these brokers, and where are their offices? I have done so many Google searches on agents or brokers in NJ that sell health insurance, but nothing useful comes up. It's either they only sell supplemental health products, or they do not mention their physical location, etc. There's always a problem. Did you use a broker/agent by any chance or go straight to BCBS? If the latter, where is their sales office? Can you go to their headquarters and buy there? I could not see where their sales offices are.

Thanks!
