06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

The best compromise so far seems to be flying into Toronto and a long romantic weekend at Niagara Falls (the Canadian side) which is a nice compromise between cost, and location!!!

After a bit of a grilling by the immigration guys on one of my US trips (i'd spent about 25% of my time there, well below the supposed limit - they did let me in though) we decided to both travel to Canada for a week - we got engaged at Niagara Falls (we'd already started K1, but this was our formal engagement with ring etc). Its beautiful and such a fun place (we'd both been there before but still both loved it).

The UK Border Patrol are truly awful. My brother is married to a Brazilian and they wouldn't let her in claiming they believed her marriage to my brother was a sham and maintained this belief even after 5 years of marriage and two kids! They were living outside the EU, however they then moved to Portugal, and because its EU they have to treat him as Portuguese not British and that means he has the right to bring his wife in under EU law. Its terrible that as a Brit he has to rely on the EU to get his wife into his home country. The UKBP weren't happy, and they've tried to stop her entering twice now (despite her having returned the first time, not absconding as they said they believe she will) but each time my brother insists they have to call their own legal helpline, and when they do they are told they must let her in. Its really upsets them as they work on the principle "if they are a bit brown, turn them down".

They make me ashamed to be British.

Thank you all. Indeed Yuna is completely right, and I won't go into details, but I'm not putting her through that again - I felt truly ashamed to be British the way UKBA treated us like criminals! ... and on the visit to the US side, with the doubt and worry of getting through I felt sick to the point of throwing up on the flight over, despite piles of paperwork and previous visits, and it is hugely stressful - it's me - I'm a worrier... :)

(Flight + Taxi to go-transit + Train + Taxi to Hotel) easy peasey :)

I feel for you and your fiancé, I truly do and I'm so sorry it happened to you both. Completely empathize with the anxiety experienced during future trips. Enjoy your trip to Canada, and rest assured you'll probably be hearing something from them on the status of your case soon I should think. There should be a lot of pretty ice on Niagara right now with all the snowstorms.

Limey, I'm also sorry to hear about the situation with your brother. It is terrible what is done to couples.
