the most horrific thing about this is that no one bothered to see why the baby was crying.

it's unfortunate that this mother didn't od in line waiting for an abortion back when she was pregnant. well meaning, 'concerned' individuals would have been all up in her business then.

You also forgot to mention that so far nobody has brought up the fact that the mother must have been on welfare and living off of food stamps and the government dole, because that is what single mothers,without exception, do.

She probably was living off food stamps. Hard to even want to try to hold a job when you're a drug addict. Unless you eliminate either the availability of drugs (yeah right) or the desire to use said drugs, things like this will happen. Its too bad people can accidentally get pregnant. It would be a far better world if you had to make the conscious choice to become pregnant. Then people would actually want their child.

Do I think there is such a thing as a functioning drug addict? I mean, I guess but it depends on what you mean by functioning. They may be able to be a waitress or an actor on a sitcom ( ) but a high level thinking job? That's rare.

imo the problem is that we treat drug addiction as a criminal offense instead of what it is. you can't determine someone's worth as a human, let alone their worth as a parent by looking at if they're an addict or not. it's not like because someone's sober and financially/emotionally ready for kids that circumstances won't change in the future. if there's one thing the local heroin epidemic has taught me, it's a free for all. people i thought had cleaned up and gotten on the right path - dead. people that i thought had the common sense enough not to take that route - dead. i'm actually tearing up right now thinking of all the kids that have been left behind in the past three years, just here, in this little stupid nowhere town.
