I was wondering what type of visa I should apply for now that I'm married and will be visiting with her family in China... Q2 or Tourist visa?

It's unclear who (which country citizenship) is traveling to which country???

If you are a US citizen traveling to China, then you need get tourist visa

from closest Chinese consulate office. For me, it costed about $140

and took about 1 week.

If you are a Chinese citizen who came to US and just got married to a US citizen,

then you don't need any visa to visit China as you are still Chinese citizen

traveling on Chinese passport.

It sounds like they are in US and wanting to travel to China...but he/she didn't make that clear.

Ok sorry, to make it more clear I'm USC, my wife is Chinese citizen. I was reading the visa categories and description from the local China Consulate. Q2 visa stated for visiting family(Chinese citizens, or foreign permanent resident...

I was checking what visa other USC married to Chinese citizen had to go visit the Chinese citzens family.

Sounds like Tourist visa again.

I'm a USC living in China on a Q2, 10 year visa with 180 day duration stays. Q1 is single entry, Q2 is multiple entry.

You can get a 10 year L (tourist) visa now but the length of stay is usually limited to 30-60 days.

OK thanks! As of right now the visa application does not Gove the 10 year option. I will look further into it though. Both my previous visas, work and tourist allowed up to 90 days.

They will automatically issue a multiple entry tourist visa with a 10 year validity.

Here's my two cents on the Q2 vs. L visa. Last year, my daughter and I both applied for Q2 visas to go visit my wife's family, we were issued L visas (with different periods of validity).

To paraphrase something Operator mentioned in a thread I posted in on this subject, the Consulate will review your application and issue the visa that they determine you are more qualified for.

I'm a USC living in China on a Q2, 10 year visa with 180 day duration stays. Q1 is single entry, Q2 is multiple entry.

You can get a 10 year L (tourist) visa now but the length of stay is usually limited to 30-60 days.

Q1 is a single entry, 30 day visa which gives you enough time to head over to the PSB for a residence permit. The residence permit will allow unlimited stays, with no border hops necessary.

The consulate in Houston told me that I could not convert from a 10 year Q2 to a residence permit - I'm not sure that that's true (seems like it's easy enough to apply for a residence permit anyway), but I got a Q1 and am told I can expect a 3 year residence permit. No renewal activity required on my part for the 3 years, whereas the Q2 would require 20 border trips over the 10 year period.

If you get a 10 year visa, unless you have a brand new passport, the passport expires before the visa. I need to get a visa for my daughter and I in about a month, my passport expires in two years and my daughter's is only good for five.So you will have to carry both passports for duration of visa?

Yep, you have to carry both passports. I've had to do it in the past, binder clips work well.
