Hello guys!

Sorry to bug you all with my questions, but I really need your advice.

I have my medical in London this week and I need your take on what to expect with the following:

I visited my GP and had blood tests for all diseases they test for (negative)

GP also gave me a sheet with my vaccination records on it

I have my 'no trace' police certificate, showing I'm not a criminal!

However:

In 2013, I took a small overdose (6 paracetamol and 2 co-codamol). I took these in haste, mainly as a sleeping aid (paracetamol makes me very drowsy). I was in the process of leaving a very abusibe relationship and I had locked myself in my bedroom to escape my ex. I intended to sleep until my ex left but he called an ambulance when he found I had taken the medicine - believe me, this was for NO other reason than to embarrass me. I was assessed as a 'low risk' and referred that day to my GP, who told me to visit the hospital and make sure I hadn't hurt my [liver ?]. I was referred to a community mental health worker and I think I attended two sessions, before she said the situation was completely circumstantial and I needed no further treatment because I was fine.

When I was 17, I thought it was a great idea to cut my arm. There's only one scar that's visible and I could probably cover it up, but I DON'T want to lie. I was simply a silly little attention seeker at the time and the damage was completely superficial (more scratches than cuts).

I have been medicated for anxiety and depression in the past. I haven't been committed or anything like that.

I visited my GP (the one who saw me on the day I took the tablets) and she wrote me a letter to explain the overdose, but nothing was included about anything else. She simply said I am no risk to anybody or myself. She mentioned that the overdose was circumstantial and unlikely to be repeated.

I understand some people might say to just cover the scar and say nothing. I don't want to do this because I am an honest person and want to do the right thing.

What can I expect? I am not medicated for anything other than being prescribed an asthma inhaler (she wrote another letter to confirm my asthma is completely acute and barely ever poses any problem whatsoever). I am not being treated for any mental health problems.

I would be really grateful for any information or advice anyone can give to me!

Thanks :)

When they notice it and ask you about the scar (and letter), your explanation might be enough, or they may refer you to a mental health professional for an independent evaluation.

Is there a high rate of denials in these circumstances? I am receiving no treatment for anything and was told there's nothing wrong with my mental state.

Thanks for helping :)

Given what you've said I sincerely doubt it would be a problem, even if they refer you to someone which is probably itself quite unlikely.

Hi Banjo monkey,

I went for my medical in December, and there was no way of me being able to hide the scars on my arms.

I was in an abusive relationship, and that's why I did what I did.

I explained to the doctor that it was a cry for help at the time, and that I hadn't done it since.

She wrote a letter for me to give to my doctor, asking about passed depression and self harm. My doctor faxed back that I'm not at risk and I've not harmed myself since.

I checked with the medical doctors that they had received the fax from my doc, which they had. I didn't hear another word.

I got my embassy interview, it was never mentioned there, and I was approved.

You need to obtain a letter from your current GP which states the following "you are not a threat to yourself or others"

This is what Knightsbridge is looking for in relation to depression and anxiety (which is linked to self harm).

Do not lie.

Good luck and hope it goes well.

I called my GP and she put together a letter to say that my overdose was not a suicide attempt and that I 'do not pose an increased risk of suicide'. Do you think it would be wise to ask her to correct it, to show that I am 'not an increased risk to [myself] or others'?
