Married bridesmaids

This is not a question related to my wedding, but I'm wondering if brides here would have/did have a married bridesmaid. Is it preferable to have an unmarried one to a married one?

In my opinion, the marital status of your attendants doesn't really matter, but is there some sort of rule?

I wouldn't think so. The only drawback would be for the groomsmen who are trying to get some bridesmaid action.

JMO, but I've never even heard of anything like that. Maybe there's something I don't know about, but I always just thought it was whoever the bride was closest to/wanted. I'm pretty sure there's no "rule" or there wouldn't be a maid of honor VS matron of honor...the latter just means married. M.

Yeah well, honestly it's because one of my best friends from college is getting married soon and everyone from our college group is a bridesmaid except me and the other married girl. I'm just feeling a bit low about it and not sure why I got "rejected"... makes me not want to have any bridesmaids at my wedding so this can't happen to anyone else.

Awwww. I know what you're saying. I was gonna say...maybe she just couldn't have any more or whatever....but that doesn't sound much better, does it???? I don't think it probably had anything to do with married/not married though. Who knows? I have a friend...GOOD friend for over 10years now, and just since after Christmas she's got a total bug up her butt about something..not really speaking to me at all. VERY odd because I've done nothing to the girl! One day laughing/chatting...next couple weeks realized we haven't been talking..busy,etc...and she leaves me a couple of cryptic messages on yahoo, not really saying what's wrong.I messaged her and asked her, but she didn't really answer. Just said she got my message. Whatever..I'm not about to beg her. She'll come around. Who KNOWS why people do what they do...I'm sure it's absolutely no reflection on your fabulousness! :) PS..Rey is coming in a day or two isn't he??? WOOT!!! Happy reunions! :) M.

Yeah! I'm just gonna focus on that! Of course he is at his mom's house saying goodbye so I can't sob on his proverbial shoulder... :)

I guess that is what VJ's OT is for, right?

She (the bride) is coming into town a week from today and we had plans to get together but I don't think I can do it. I discovered this from the website at the bottom of her save the date card, so I don't think she knows it upset me. I guess I was just hoping it was something to do with being married, but then I realized that the other married girl's husband is in the wedding party. Isn't it sort of tactless to invite a husband but not a wife to be in the party, especially if you are friends with both?

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Not sure if I agree on that one either. Ideally, the husband to be is supposed to pick the groomsmen...so if the guy is one of his best friends or WHATEVER reason he's pickin him...shouldn't really mean that his wife has to be chosen, IMO. Sorry I don't have anything to say to really make you feel better about that....I know what you mean about getting together with her though..can't help but wonder why, etc....

But yeah..um...REY!!! Yeah...that. That's right...uh huh...uh HUH UH HUH UH HUHHHHHHHHHHH. :) M.

PS..if it makes you feel better..look at the lil pic in my siggy and pretend that the computer is her head or sumthin like that..JUST for now... hehehehe ;) M.

From Wikipedia:

A bridesmaid is a girl or young woman who attends to the bride during or after a wedding or marriage ceremony. Traditionally bridesmaids were chosen from unwed young women of marriageable age.

In early Roman times, bridesmaids formed a kind of bridal infantry as they accompanied the bride to the groom's village. This "protective shield" of similarly outfitted bridesmaids was supposed to intervene if any wayward thugs or vengeful suitors tried to hurt the bride or steal her dowry.

However, the Western bridesmaid tradition seems to have originated from later Roman law, which required ten witnesses at a wedding in order to outsmart evil spirits believed to attend marriage ceremonies. The bridesmaids and ushers dressed in identical clothing to the bride and groom, so that the evil spirits would not know who was getting married. Even as late as 19th century England, there was a belief that ill-wishers could administer curses and taint the wedding. In Victorian wedding photographs, for example, the bride and groom can look very similar to other members of the bridal party.

The principal bridesmaid is called the maid of honor (or matron of honor if she is married).

A bridesmaid is often a close friend or sister. Often there is more than one bridesmaid: in modern times the bride chooses how many to have. Historically, no person of status went out unattended, and the size of the retinue was closely calculated to be appropriate to the status of the personage.

JP, you beat me to it. I was going to point out that bridesmaids originally came into being as decoys to prevent the bride from being snatched and held for ransom and marital status had nothing to do with it. The deciding factor was a resemblance to the bride.
