Than is only because Obama devalued the dollar faster than any President since Jimmy Carter.

Didn't the Fed do that by lowering interest raates?

Yes, and made old people much poorer. That .03% monthly return on savings does not cut it, especially when you are forced to convert your tax-deferred investments into annuities after a certain age.

At 70 and a half, you must start taking mandatory retirement distributions based on your life expectancy. One way to handle this is just to convert everything into an annuity.

Devalued compared to what? Inflation is low, Silver , Oil and Gold down. Steady against the Euro...

There are a variety of indexes you can move your annuity into and you are not bound to accept passbook savings. Even T-bills would beat the above, are you sure your financial advisor explored all of your options?

I an sure you pain is real. I forget that folks are on fixed incomes. I did notice that with a deep freeze, Costco card and seal a meal I can take a big chunk out of my grocery bill.

Purchasing power, mate. I take it you don't do the shopping for the family.

I actually do much of the shopping and know that some stuff is getting more expensive. But that's been that way since I can remember. And it is really happening all over the world. It is hitting people in other places much harder than it does people here in the US. The issue is not so much a devalued dollar as it is generally rising commodity prices which is more of a demand vs. supply issue.
