A green card holder need passport when he/she travels by road from WA state to Canada?

Or just green card is enough?

And if they require passport , do they enter any entry stamp or something on non US passport

also, do they maintain records who visited Canada and if and when they return?

How long a green card holder stay in Canada?

Do they inform this to US authorities if someone does not return to US?

LPRs of any nationality require only their green card and valid foreign passport to visit Canada or Mexico; this is because of special treaty provisions.

You can actually travel to Canada from WA with just a green card, you won't even need a passport. You can find all the info right here http://www.cbsa.gc.ca/travel-voyage/ifvc-rpvc-eng.html#a1

I had also heard that GC is enough; however, when I entered Canada this summer (land crossing), they wanted to see both my passport and the Green Card. They also stamped my passport. That was at the Waterton Lakes border crossing.

Best is probably to take both, just in case.

Green card and Passport is best.

Yes they keep track of who visits Canada

You can stay what ever time frame they allow when you cross. To the max time allowed.

If you do not return to the US you will be abandoning your GC and you would be living illegally in Canada if you entered as a visitor. Your GC does not give you permission to live or work in Canada.

Can you get through without the passport? Yes, quite possibly. Will they pull you into secondary, interrogate you for possibly hours and possibly deny you? Quite possibly. It is better to be safe than sorry.

It's passport and green card, even from your own link.

From experience, and multiple contacts with CBSA (as in daily for the last few years), green card is sufficient ID. Anyone with more questions can call them, they actually are quite nice on the phone.

Always bring a passport when you are traveling to a foreign country as backup. Very little is gained by leaving the passport at home.
