Convert Pesos to US Dollars and move to US Bank Account

What is the most efficient and cost effective way to convert Mexican Pesos to US Dollars when moving from Mexico to the US. We are nearing the completion of the immigration process for IR/CR-1 Visa, and my wife wants to move her money in her bank to a US account. (either her own, which i don't think she can get until she gets a social security #), Or my account in the USA.

Do you have to do a foreign exchange site? Use ATMs to take the money out when she's here?

any ideas or advice would be appreciated. Thanks

What about a cashier's check that she can redeem once she has her SSN and can open her own US bank account?

My SO and I were able to open a joint account at a bank that he already had established a relationship with (Wells Fargo). They let us open in both names (unmarried) as long as there was one legal SSN on it (his). We had no problems. I ended up just doing an ATM withdrawl and deposited my funds in. I called my home bank and they upped my ATM withdrawl limit so that I could take everything out.

I used transferwise to move all my euros to the states it's very loved in Europe.

If you get invited you have free transfer so you can take advantage of that a transfer the biggest amount of money totally free.

I still use it once a month to make payments, because it's cheapest than a normal transfers and it says right away the amount of money the conversion is. Also best part is there are 2 ways of transfer money normal transfer or paying with your own debit card to yourself. I always use the second way it's like purchasing a products and paying to yourself. If that makes any sense.... Hahah

Not sure how many countries can use it but over Europe its #1 way. I discover about it thanks this forum from a german user and I'm happy about it.

I really LOVE it! I wish I would habe known anout it sooner!!

we would always use western union..paypal... bank transfers. Or when I came visit I would bring my euros and change it in my husbands bank. they claim its free but what they really do is rate your money value lower so they keep that way when doing the conversion.

Ive spent soooo much money over the years because of this dollar-euro thing!

well after my husband proposed I stayed here this summer it wasnt the plan at all so all my belongings were in spain and money.

My family was able to send me my winter clothes and some personal items this past septemebr but with the money couldnt help.

I searched for weeks trying to find a way of not losing money, we are not rich at all so every penny was important, specially when you are going to be months without being able to work.

One day I was looking around the forum learning about how credit history works here and then he mentioned Transferwise I went to take a look and since then no regrets

My family also likes to help and send some money for birthdays, Christmas etc. So I made accounts to my mom and if she feels generous she uses it too so it's good. I was so tired of western union SO expensive

Right now since I still don't have SSN my husband opened a joint bank account and that's were I sent all my money. So it would still work for people who still can't open their own and want to have use of their own money

Yes there is 0 fee if you are invited. And if you aren't invited I exactly don't know if it depends on country or amount of money! I would have to check that. Main page says 0,5% The website really explains everything.
