Lying was apparently the only way they could get this passed. <_<

Obamacare Architect: Lack of Transparency Was Key Because ‘Stupidity Of The American Voter’ Would Have Killed Obamacare

Obamacare architect Jonathan Gruber said that lack of transparency was a major part of getting Obamacare passed because “the stupidity of the American voter” would have killed the law if more people knew what was in it.

Gruber, the MIT professor who served as a technical consultant to the Obama administration during Obamacare’s design, also made clear during a panel quietly captured on video that the individual mandate, which was only upheld by the Supreme Court because it was a tax, was not actually a tax.

“This bill was written in a tortured way to make sure CBO did not score the mandate as taxes. If CBO scored the mandate as taxes, the bill dies. Okay, so it’s written to do that. In terms of risk rated subsidies, if you had a law which said that healthy people are going to pay in – you made explicit healthy people pay in and sick people get money, it would not have passed… Lack of transparency is a huge political advantage. And basically, call it the stupidity of the American voter or whatever, but basically that was really really critical for the thing to pass… Look, I wish Mark was right that we could make it all transparent, but I’d rather have this law than not.”

The liberal elite ... know that the people simply cannot be trusted; that they are incapable of just and fair self-government; that left to their own devices, their society will be racist, sexist, homophobic, and inequitable -- and the liberal elite know how to fix things. They are going to help us live the good and just life, even if they have to lie to us and force us to do it. And they detest those who stand in their way."

This is not for the right wing outrage brigade but for those who prefer actual, contextual information. The snippet that is making its way through the right wing nutters blog sphere and echo chamber now comes from this panel discussion. The reality is hard but it's the reality all the same. Congressional sausage making is messy business. Always has been, always will be.

The problem is that the bill didn't have any pictures, which made comprehension virtually impossible for the motley crew. Just way too many words...

Hogwash. The bill was posted online - everyone had access to see it and see what's in it.

Obama ran on the promise of the ACA and immigration reform - those two issues were at the center of his platform. If the American people have an issue with the ACA, it is that it didn't go far enough.

The naysayers forget that a lot of the provisions on the ACA were taken from Romneycare in Mass and from an old bill the GOP drafted in the 90s.

Did the "people" vote for Obamacare or the politicians?

Wow! So this bill was a spin off of Mitt Romney style?

Yes, it was. The bill contained legislation from both sides of the aisles. Of course, the TBs decided they were against it for pure partisan reasons.
