During a Wednesday address to discuss his state’s preparedness procedures, the Republican governor said that while he is taking the threat from Ebola seriously, the intense media attention has created unnecessary anxiety.

“The public in New Jersey needs to know we’re prepared and we’re ready to deal with whatever comes,” Christie said during his remarks, adding that his administration is taking the Ebola threat “extraordinarily seriously.”

“Let’s not be hysterical about it,” Christie added.

The governor also urged parents to listen to their children and assure them that they are not at risk to contract the virus. He relayed a conversation he had with his own daughter, Bridget, who, he said, worried that she would contract Ebola. “I listened to her for a long time about what her concerns were for a few minutes,” he said. “And then I said to her, ‘Listen it’s not going to happen. You’re not going to get it. That’s not the way this works. It’s not like getting a cold.’”
