Guns don't offer protection – whatever the National Rifle Association says

I think having a gun for protection, given sufficient training, isn't a bad thing. I do think however, there are some folks that are armed and more likely to aggravate a situation because they're armed. If you practice proper gun safety though, more power to you.

You mean like these two guys would still be alive if they hadn't packed guns for their protection?

I think they would still be alive if both men exercised caution and restraint instead of pulling out their guns and shooting each other.

So had they not packed a gun, then they could obviously not have pulled it. And then they could not have shot and killed each other. The problem with the restraint is that some of that goes out the window when one feels protected by a gun. Seems to have been the case with both of these guys and there are thousands of other examples where that feeling of protection has caused gun owners to get into confrontations that they would otherwise not have gotten themselves into.

Yeah, but what would've happened if one of them had a bicycle in his trunk, or even worse a set of stairs?

There's some truth to that. But to be fair, there are others that know the weight of killing someone is a lot to bear:

Back in 2003, I was assigned to the Master of Arms brigade for 6 months with a few other sailors. We had to undergo weapons and military police training. Once we graduated, we were sent out to stand watch and perform roving duties. On Thanksgiving night, I had duty on the gate in my neighborhood. Since my family was in Germany visiting relatives, one of my co workers invited me over with some other folks from work. One of the guys there was very loud and had a drinking problem. We got into a heated argument over something trivial and he started to get loud and walk towards me. I was armed with a PR-24(baton) and a 9-mm Beretta handgun loaded. The whole time, I had my hand rested on the 24. I never once thought about shooting him. The other sailors grabbed him and took him outside to cool off.

I know instinctively pulling a gun on someone should absolutely be the LAST resort because doing that might make the person come at you even harder.

lol.

Shot five bears so far, every one of them trying to do me in. You want to talk about gratitude? That's watching a 600 + pound grizzly hit the ground POW! Ten yards from you, in a full-on charge. .375 H&H magnum. It will take down an elephant no problem.

It is odd, hearing people who don't know their butt from a hole in the ground telling you all about guns. I had a bizarre incident a little over ten years ago with some crazy person running up at me after I had just parked the plane. I pulled my glock .40 and golly, he changed his mind right away. That guy was definitely unstable, but he had sense enough to run from a gun.

I think you had a lot more weapons and other related training than most gun aficionados can claim.
