Some statistics according to age. As most might expect, young men are the ones who find trouble the most.

I do not profess to have a solution to these well substantiated facts, but looking as them with eyes wide open might just be a good start.

According to the previous page of stats its because they break more laws.. Same reason there are more men in jail than women.

A better way to go about addressing the problem I think is to ask why they break more laws - I'd like to see a comparison of stats filtered on poverty and drug use - I think there is also an issue with inner city black culture which itself has been shaped over the years by racism, mistrust, poverty, gangs, etc and has created a difficult to stop spiral.

For Americans in jail in general: drugs.. We have to do something about the drugs and the whole infrastructure of crime around it. I am interested to see how Colorado and Washington fare with legalization - Our state borders Washington and has some of the stiffest penalties for 420 - there are now special patrols watching for travelers coming back from Washington.

I don't believe it.. Prove it to me and I still won't believe it. -Ford Prefect

okay, so lib thinks more black men are in jail because white folks don't need rims..i bit overly simplistic but that's to be expected.

Those in jail didn't get arrested by accident. They were arrested for a reason, had a trial, and were convicted. Most of us can believe a very small number of those were convicted due to socio-economic reasons and poor defense, but only deliberate denial of facts can sway the in-your-face numbers of high-incidence.

i like to think big picture. i agree that the war on drugs is a big component of this puzzle. i believe that inner city youth culture, which isn't specific to black youth, but a large portion of today's youth in general in suburban and ghetto settings, is a symptom of our country's mass incarceration and not a cause.

i don't doubt that, i don't believe any of this happens by accident. quite the opposite actually.

What part of my statement do you agree or doubt and why? Should I assume that you think the fact that blacks dominate American prison population is simply because of the color of their skin?

Just trying to put it in terms you understand. Don't dare make it too hard for you.... Why is the father of your son... I guess not your husband or you would have said ex... Pardon me if I am wrong .. He has a record.. Because he broke a law correct. Break laws you go to jail. If they are unpopular change them . Dog said in nevada at the bundy ranch.... Do the crime do the time......Guess he was only talking about the new terrorist... A white person with a gun.

none of this is simple.

i don't doubt the fact that there are a disproportionate number of minorities in jail.

the father of my son, is my ex husband. i don't really consider him an ex husband because he was never a husband really to begin with. pardoned.

he has a record like most of my peers - of any color. that is another symptom of the overlying issue..more and more people coming of age can expect to have a record, since more and more people in this country are going to jail.

is there something about americans that we need more policing? we need jail time, probation more?

It may not be as complicated as you think it is. What may complicate it however is having two people look at the same thing and both see something completely different.

I believe the facts that American prisons are populated mostly by blacks. I also believe that nearly every single black man in jail deserves to be there. Why? Because they broke the law, got caught, and were convicted in a court of law.

So the question is? Are black people just drawn to be criminals, or is it something else behind it?

I'll take a shot at it. I think that for a lot of black men it has become socially acceptable to spend time behind bars, in some cases even a rite of passage. I personally feel that if I were to be sent to jail I would miss out on all that life has to offer. I've raised my kids to have the same belief and that seems to keep us in line. I'm afraid that black youths maybe don't have the same incentives to stay out of jail, they seem to lack the vision of a future.

So who is to blame? My feeling is that putting the blame on white society is a very easy option, one that many take but blame isn't going to solve any problem let alone one as complex and deeply rooted as this problem. So personally I think trying to find the blame is a complete waste of time.

So how do you solve it? That's a big question huh? It's been asked for a long time. I have no idea if there is one true answer. I can tell you what I think the answers aren't. The answer isn't the federal government, finger pointing or blame. It's not looting and rioting and bad cops. I do think it has to start from the ground up and right now in this country its not happening. Racial divides in this country seem to be higher now than I can remember in my entire life. It's a doom loop and I don't see it ending any time soon. We all need to look inward on this one.

for me, personally, the most racial tension i've ever felt was during the rodney king riots. we were kids and while we knew there was tension, the riots really brought it to a head a personal level. since we watched footage in class and had to talk about it. i wonder if classrooms are doing that now with ferguson. probably not, someone would get sued or fired.

so you have faith in our judicial and prison systems and the money behind it. i would have to assume that you don't give profiling any merit. i would also have to assume that you're a champion of big government, and trust our government to keep a watchful eye on all of these deserving criminals and keep them locked up.
