Oringinal vs. certified copies

I see on one of the steps I need to supply original divorce decrees. Certified copies won't be accepted? I don't have a clue where the originals are, plus I'm not in the States to get them. What to do?

Certified copies should be fine that is what I used for my k1 visa.

I think there's only one 'original' copy with the wet signature of the Judge and it is filed with the courthouse where the divorce was finalized. The court never releases this copy.

A certified copy (with signature/stamp of the court clerk as well as embossed seal on all pages) is a certified copy of the original and can be used for all purposes. I believe most courthouses you need to obtain this in person, but it may vary from state to state / county to county. You may need to assign power of attorney to someone in order to retrieve it.

certified copy = a copy certified by the issuing authority. For a USCitizen divorced in the USA - this is a thing easily bought at the county courthouse / county registrar / county records office

Are you speaking about just filing the petition I-130 to USCIS you only need copies. When you get to NVC you need originals or certified copies.

USCIS only requires photocopies of any divorce decrees. They NEED to be included.

NVC requires originals or certified copies. A certified copy is a copy from the original issuer, not a notarized copy.

NVC doesn't ask for Petitioner's divorce documents during doc intake at NVC. These must be shown on interview day.

If beneficiary has divorce docs - must be turned in with NVC Submittal - the originals plus a photocopy

or

certified copy (certified by issuing authority) plus a photocopy.

I saw that for the I-130 I need certified copies and for the interview it said original. I only have one certified copy of each and I'd hate to send it. I'm getting the certified copies copied and notarized to send with the I-130 and save the certified for the last phase. Do you think this will work? Or should I just send a copy of the certified copy?

Why wasting money getting a certified copy notarized when its not needed. All you need with the I-130 is a copy. get your original or certified copy run in in the copier machine and that's that.

Its at NVC you will need originals or a certified copy and no notarized copy is not a certified copy.

USCIS - I-130 = Copies of originals or certified copies only are required

NVC - Originals or certified copy of originals only will be accepted. (also send along a copy with originals to get your originals back at interview)
