My fiancé is a domestic helper for a couple in hk. I applied for a k-1 visa . My question is what are the laws as far as opening another person's mail . Here in the us it is a federal crime . I am afraid her employers will open her mail or not let her have her packet from me or the embassy in the philipines . They have opened her mail before and read a letter to her instead of giving it to her .

Clearly that is an unacceptable invasion of privacy, but do they give it to her intact? That is really what you want. Making waves with rich people for the few remaining months she will be there, when they control her salary as well as living conditions, sounds couterproductive to me.

If there is another address/person to send it to...likely she has a trusted friend there???

It would be better if she comes back to the Philippines and be interviewed there.

Instead of blowing things out of proportion by filing a complaint, it'll be for her safety as well.

Yes she is going back to philipines for her interview . But she has to get papers from me and the phil. Consulate also . I am afraid they will intercept her mail and not let her have it . The lady employer already told her she had to resign if she went to the Philippines for her interview . She did not like the idea of her going . Not very nice people at all .

Yes it is illegal for them to intercept her mail. But what if she reports them to the police? They control her salary and her living conditions and could make her sorry for reporting them without breaking any more laws. I think it is not a good idea.

What about sending the mail to her family in the Philippines? Can they scan it and email it to her? My fiance was also a domestic in Hong Kong, and that is exactly what we did. Her employers were hostile to her plans, but eventually they did chill out and even bought her a cake on her last day there. Still cutting them out of the loop with the mail was a good choice.
