Just wondering...

what immunization shots to Canadians need to go with their medical exam? The regular ones listed? Also.. can I just start getting those shots now, way ahead of that part of the process (before a medical appointment) to get it out the the way? How did others go about this? I hate shots.

The shots need to be age appropriate, for example I did not need the HPV shot because I was over the age of 26. Look at the panel physician website in the city you'll be having your medical done at (there are 4 locations across Canada) and see what is required.

a lot of them you already have, I assume. I was able to get my school medical that had all my shots listed. You can also get a titre test to see which ones you already have.

The ones you need, you can get at any time

good luck

scroll down to 19-49 yrs... all the same... MMR, Tdap, Varicella (or verbal declaration of chicken pox) and influenza in season.

I had MMR and Tdap for free at my local health clinic, but I did have my doctor test for MMR (mumps, measles, rubella) and Varicella before I did that to see if I was missing any immunity. I was for measles and you can't get just a measles vaccine.

BTW it's best to check to see if you can get the vaccination for free or cheap at the health clinic or doctor vs paying at the medical.

I had all my shots as a child too but sometimes mumps or measles can wear off. But you shouldn't need to get them again no if you have the immunization records. .

I had all three as a kid [have documents from health records] so I wouldnt need to get them checked again would I ?

It depends on your age- if you have recieved a TDAP vaccination within the last ten years as an adult and you have had two MMR shots, you shouldn't need to recieve any more (from my understanding at least).

Routine Adult Immunization Schedule (from SaskHealth website, but I assume its the same across Canada):

Td (Tetanus, Diphtheria) every 10 years.

  • Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, acellular Pertussis) should replace one of the Td doses.

MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)

  • Two doses for those born since January 1, 1970.

I had to get both because the second MMR booster that I recieved in high school was just MR (mumps/ruebella) and I haven't recieved a TDAP shot since childhood. They were both free.

Did the Doctor say you had to get both, both mine are from a kid,

Yeah my family doc did- I just printed off the instructions from where I am getting my medical done (in Vancouver) & brought my childhood immunization record and said "Help what need?!" (TDAP and MMR).

Dr.Cheema's instructions on the Vancouver clinic website are:

I M M U N I Z A T I O N:

You must bring proof of the immunization showing the exact date (MM-dd-YYYY) for each of the vaccines required according to your age group.

The documents without exact dates (MM-dd-YYYY) you were immunized are not accpetable.

Please note that only Doctor's note without exact date are not valid documents as proof of immunization. The vaccination proof can be your vaccination records, health passport, school vaccine record or a blood test result showing that you have been immunized. Please submit the documents in English. If the documents are in a foreign language, please provide an English Translation along with the original report.

27-49 YEARS

Tdap (Adacel or Boosterix) - ensure you get Tdap not just Td

MMR Measles, Mumps, Rubella. ("MR" and "MM" are not enough. You need MMR)

Varicella - If you had "Chicken Pox" disease, no vaccine is needed

Influenza (only required during October - February, annually)

I had to get the MMR again because apparently it was very common for my age group (late 20s early 30s) to not get the second MMR vaccine as a child. Just means you can get it again.

As long as you have your records you shouldn't need a whole lot done. In my case I needed a flu shot, tdap booster and mmr booster. I'm 33. Btw if you don't like needles you're gonna love the blood test...

Here is the most important part of the whole thing to remember though, make sure YOU GET A COPY OF THE IMMUNIZATION SHEET THE DR WILL PRINT. You need it for AOS or you'll need to go to a civil surgeon and do it all over again once you move.

I only needed to get the Tdap shot, I haven't had my MMR since the 80's but they said it was only suggested not mandatory so I did not get another one. I had all my records from elementary school. I also didn't need the flu shot since my interview was in April and wasn't during the flu season dates.

I recently took care of all of mine. I'd had Tdap taken care of as child but needed an MMR booster (that thing feels like someone punched you in the arm. ugh). I also had to do varicella (after getting a blood test). Varicella is 2 shots a month apart.

On another note: most of my immunization records are from my elementary/middle school in Toronto and I can't get anything from my doctor as I had the majority of shots done as a kid in Iran. Do you guys think that'll be acceptable? It's all signed and stamped and official from the TDSB..

I am the beneficiary.
