Hi all, I have a question I hope you can help me with.

My wife came here on a K-1 visa from China and we were married last may. She received her green card last Nov and now needs to go back to China to visit her sister. I have read that she just travels home on her Chinese passport which is in her maiden name and when she returns to the US in 3-4 weeks she uses her green card here. My question is how does she leave China to come back, won't they require an exit visa? I haven't been able to find any good answers about this so I'm looking for help.

Thanks, this forum has always been a big help, could not have gotten my now wife here with out it! :-)

Her green card will take the place of a visa. She has nothing to worry about.

(organizer hat off)

I wasn't aware that Chinese citizens needed an exit visa?

In Dec. 2012, my Chinese wife traveled home to see her frail mother shortly after getting her conditional GC. She took her valid Chinese passport and her conditional GC, and had no issues (no name changes). Her Chinese passport allowed her entrance into China, and her GC allowed her entrance into the US.

YMMV, consider checking with your local Chinese consulate in San Francisco:

Good luck.

My question is how does she leave China to come back, won't they require an exit visa?

She flashes her passport, green card and usa marriage certificate at the immigration goons at the airport in China.

Why all 3? Assumption is all names are on the marriage certificate.

Darnell and A&B, I haven't posted in many months, but I referred someone that wants to do a K1 visa from China to use Visajourney to guide them, and told them that any questions they had, that you two, monitoring the China Portal, were the EXPERTS, better than any lawyers on earth, in my opinion. You two are doing such a great service, and for free for others - Kudos, kudos, and more kudos to you (and some others on this site as well!)

Thanks guys, I was planning on her taking a copy of the marriage cert.

I have checked with the Chinese consulate and they sent us to a web site where you can get a form to change the name on her passport, I'm just not sure if we have the time to do this because we have to then go to the consulate. If the advice here is good it would be much easier to go this route since we already have these documents.

Yes, the Chinese do need a visa to come to the US, before I met my wife she wanted to visit the US and was turned down and my stepson had to get a student visa to go to school here.

Stevo, I agree, they both help a lot of folks!

I haven't posted in some months either, been very busy working, lucky for me I do a lot from home so I get to spend time with my wife. She loves it here and goes to English classes 3 days a week to improve her English which is actually pretty good.

This forum and the folks on it really helped make it all happen.

I asked you if a Chinese citizen needs an exit visa to leave China, that is a different situation than entering the US. Your wife does not need a visa to come to US, she is a US Permanent Resident, as evidenced by the Green Card in her possession; nor should she need a visa to exit China, she is a Chinese citizen, with a valid Chinese passport, correct? Agree with Darnell, bring a copy of the marriage license.

Darnell is the pro, I am but learning from the Buckeye master......

Appreciate the accolades stevo, though I am not so sure if I warrant them......Darnell, yes.....
