I'm using turbotax and was planning on using status: married filing separately for now and amending the status when my spouse comes to the U.S. I was under the impression that this status does not require a SSN for the spouse of the filer. However, it seems that turbotax (and the IRS) do indeed require the SSN of the filing spouse. Can anyone confirm?

I think you have to print it out , fill and enter NRA for spouse's SSN and mail it to IRS office. ( have a look these two links, almost the same situation as yours )

And also, that is what 1040 instructions say

Be sure to enter your spouse's SSN or
ITIN on Form 1040. If your spouse does
not have and is not required to have an
SSN or ITIN, enter “NRA.”

Thanks, should have googled the 1040 instructions. Brain fart :)
