Spain search as storm sweeps three family members into sea

A search operation has been launched off Spain's north-west coast after three people from the same family were swept out to the sea by a huge wave.

A man, two of his daughters and his brother were engulfed by the wave as they walked near the rocky shoreline in Valdovino, Galicia, El Pais reported.

One daughter managed to scramble back to the shore and was taken to hospital, the report said.

It comes as severe storms batter Europe's Atlantic coastlines.

Local Mayor Jose Antonio Vigo said the search for the three still missing was being supported by a ship and an aircraft from a rescue centre based at A Coruna.

He said the search effort was being hampered by the stormy conditions with waves 10m (32ft) high and winds of 80km/h (50mph) .

"The sea is so upset that there is only foam," he said. "It will be very difficult to see anything down there."

The mayor said that those missing were local people who had probably gone to the shore to watch the huge waves.

I'd wager a guess that they're already with Allah or whatever they called their God.

I hope they get closure either way. We got hit with this snow storm and we've lost 13 people due to cold and accidents. It's a shame.

It is but it's also a miracle that it isn't more. We went down from the mid 80's yesterday to barely above freezing now. By tomorrow morning we'll be in the upper 20's. And by Wednesday, we'll be back in the 70's. Crazy.

Tell me about it, the last time it was this bad was 1989. Base has been closed down since yesterday. We aren't prepared for the extreme cold. I've never seen 8 inches of snow here before so folks is losing their minds.
