A New York City-area police officer could be fired after posting an obscene, racist and threatening rant against President Barack Obama on social media.

Officer Peter Burns, of Pleasantville police, was accused of making the comments Dec. 11 on a Facebook page he operated under the name “####### Trapper.”

“The fact that he (Obama) is still alive bewilders me,” Burns allegedly wrote in the post. “Go die in a shallow grave you Muslim commie.”

After a reporter with The Journal News showed the post to Police Chief Richard Love on Monday, he promised to take immediate action.

Burns was placed on administrative leave Tuesday and relieved of his duties, and Love said the officer could be fired or disciplined after an internal affairs investigation was completed.

The page was set up as private, so only his Facebook friends could see his posts, and the reporter did not indicate how he gained access to the posts.

Face Book seems to be open to anyone that seriously wants to see your face book..........if people don't want to be punished or prosecuted for anything they think don't write it on a social net work or media....some employers check face book users before hiring and also many employers check their employees face book. after they are hired......people have been fired for writing derogatory statements about their place of employment and for posting pics of things they do when off duty from their job.

It don't matter what we think about it......its just part of life now.

True... I find it laughable when Joe Doe gets all upset because he believes the NSA is listening to his conversations with his buddies and yet he is only too quick to publish everything about his private life on an open internet site. Who needs the NSA when there is The Facebook?

Respectfully disagree. Consent to share things, on one's own terms, is sacred. The people I bore on Facebook with TrailBlazers scores and where I'm having coffee Tuesday morning are different than my phone calls possibly being listened to without my consent, with possible added scrutiny because I married a guy with one of those furriner Muslim names and we go to a masjid sometimes. I get to bore people on my own terms, darnit.

You don't own the electrons. Although the Constitution states you have a right to be secure in your person and papers, it does not shield you from reasonable searches and seizures. Take child porn, for instance. Even though you are only sharing with a select group of people on the internetz, the overwhelming public good makes it reasonable to throw you in jail wearing a pink dress with a bunch of folks all named Bubba.

Generally speaking its not good form to put anything on social media that you know your employer would potentially have access to and might frown upon. That's just common sense.

Not revealing to the world that you (as a cop) are a racist melonfarmer is a no brainer. Of course this conclusion requires the use of a brain and racists just aren't very smart.

I think when you threaten individuals your right to privacy is lost. People should really think before they use social media.

If this was someone's feelings towards your family member and they killed the person, then you found out later they posted about it on a social media website, you would be like, "well why didn't someone say something?"

The fact that there are people still calling O a Muslim or a Commie is, at first brush, hilarious, but sad when you think about it because it means there are people that dimwitted out there. I guess they make great consumers! The stuff of marketing folks' wet dreams.

If this was someone's feelings towards your family member and they killed the person, then you found out later they posted about it on a social media website, you would be like, "well why didn't someone say something?"

When you look at what was written, it's not an actual threat, so that's a moot point.

Back to the original question, I think that as the idiot in question had his post set to private, he should have the reasonable expectation of privacy. Doesn't mean he's not an idiot, though.
