Don't buy anything until the visa is in hand. Period.

As of Dec 7, 2009, now Zero miles apart (literally)!

My appointment took so long than we expected. I already paid all the visa fees for me and my son (k2). And the availability of the appointment is on April 21, 2014. I don't know if we can still have an earlier appointment since we are planning to spend our son's birthday on Jan. 14, 2014 at Disneyland that we promised to. :(

unfortunately you are stuck with this plan - you are not the first to do this. I have seen many non-refundable flights get cancelled. Don't forget ... It takes 4 more weeks to get the K2 Visa (yours is delivered in a matter of days).

We bought ours before the visa was issued. Picked the visa up around noon and headed to the airport for a flight the same evening. The decision is a risk/reward decision only the OP can make. If the loss of a $1000 ticket is a risk he is willing to take, so be it. I took the risk because the ticket I purchased could be changed to any date within the next year for under $100 dollars. If it had been a $3000 ticket with no refund or changes, my decision would have been different. Only the OP can decide how much risk he is willing to take.

Hey could you guys tell me, what is the policy about picking up the visa at the consulate as opposed to letting them mail it ? Do you just tell them after they approve you while your still in the interview to please hold it for pickup and they notify you that it is ready? Thanks !

The option to pickup the visa at Bangkok is not available any longer. You may be able to have it held at Thai post in Bangkok but I am not sure if she can avoid a trip back to address of record.

That said, I purchased Jamnan's ticket with miles a week before I filed my 129f (we got her green card in the mail a year and a day after we first met) but we really appreciated the extra week to spend with her son and family and catch our breath before traveling home on my bithday.
