i-864 How to list negative income

Hello,

I am confused about part 6 (Sponsor's Income and Employment) of the I-864.

My adjusted gross income on my last three tax returns was listed as negative. This is not because I didn't work at all, but because of foreign income exclusions (I live outside the US) and because of loss carryforward from previous years.

Do I list the negative amount on the I-864? Or 0? Or do I list the amount of gross income that appears on my foreign tax return?

I am also quitting working this month, so my income will actually be less than 0 when I return to the US.

Thanks!

A person not domiciled in the US cannot be a sponsor. So what's what? You have no timeline filled out so it's hard to help with specifics.

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

I don't understand your unhelpful comment. I never said I am not domiciled in the US - and domicile is a separate issue. I also don't understand how a timeline would at all help with answering this question.

All I need to know is if it is possible to list a negative amount as my income on the I-864, or that if I should write 0. Does anyone have an idea?

Thanks,

I have a similar issue as I was living and working in India since 2008. I moved back to the US in June 2013 just to have my income be on the positive side. My tax returns for 2009-2012 all have negative income as well due to the foreign income exclusions and losses I sustained in the US.

I am curious what to list as we have not yet reached the I864 stage yet.

Okay, I won't help you then.

You said you live outside the US, which means you are not domiciled there, so you did say that.

Sometimes you have to help people to help you, but you don't want to, so okay.

They want to know about income/assets being used to meet the requirements of the I-864 (see instruction pdf, part 6).

If you have none to use - 0.

They want before tax income values.

Thank you for your response. I am still unsure of what to put down.

I've read all of the instructions that I can find, and I know to list my total gross income (which would be line 22 on my 1040).

For me this amount is still a big negative before taxes. So, do I list 0 or the negative amount?

Thanks,

Yes, it is possible to live outside the US but still be domiciled there.

Please take a look at this article about country of domicile http://www.***removed***/affidavit-of-support/country-of-domicile.html

I hope you can understand that I do not want to share any more personal information than necessary on the internet.
