That nasty bits are the important bits... If the first paragraph of a book says to rape all women with red hair then the next 600 pages talk about making the earth a better place by planting trees and playing volleyball... My focus is on the women with red hair.. Saying "Yeah but you don't even mention the part where where we plant trees!" misses the point.

But if the bible says the same thing, the actual response I got here was "but no one reads the Old Testement anymore".

I did not mention any particular religious text in my response.. Now that you mention it I received the same response as well when I quoted what the old testament said about homosexuals. I hope if you see the incorrectness of leaving out the parts of the Bible that a follower finds uncomfortable you also see that it is wrong to give a pass on the nasty bits of your own religious text.

The verse you're talking about is the same one I was referring when someone asked about the Quran's stance on homosexuality. It's wrong on both sides. There are things in the bible that I have a problem with, and I've been in that religion my entire life. The same thing goes for the Quran as well.

I am curious - and no disrespect meant, I imagine most people of faith have this exercise - How do you deal with the parts that go against your personal beliefs? Do you follow the words set out that you disagree with personally?

The righteous path is straight and narrow, strewn with pitfalls, and great chasms to either side.

For me, I try to put religious text in context, with the times. When you study religion as a scholastic pursuit, the courses are often found in the Humanities department.

Patriot says it best. Context is key. In some countries when it comes to Islam, they follow it to the letter. Malaysia is a bit more laxed, so the more extreme parts of the book they don't follow, and neither do I.

Yep. That pretty much sums it up.

All books do this through out different time periods. The word of God should transcend this. Context in my mind means people are attempting to make something say what they want. I mean, you can't really say God is wrong, so you just say well, there is deeper meaning. Which could mean someone has a better feel for the text or they don't want you to focus so hard on that specific part of the text.

there's always the old fallback of faith. you must have faith that god had a reason for enlightening us with the old testament and their homophobic/sex trade/neanderthal ways. he allowed that text into his holy word for a reason, we just don't know what the reason is yet. that's how god likes to keep us, on our toes.

I mean more the context of when a particular text was written. For instance, most of what is considered the Old Testament was compiled during and just after the Babylonian Captivity. Besides borrowing heavily from the mythology of the Babylonians and later the Persians, the remnants of the Israelites and the peoples they conquered, were having a difficult time maintaining their own identity as a nation. The former can be seen in the creation and flood stories, the latter in the teachings (and often insane rantings) of the early prophets.

Thanks for sharing everyone.. Enjoyed the responses but I have nothing useful to add.

A totally unrelated 9/11 tidbit I noticed... I was able to get plane seats very cheap for my vacation this year. For some reason a segment of the population chooses not to fly on that date. Remember that when planning trips for next year.
