Seattle leaders to launch 'Gun Free Zone' program

Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn is partnering with Washington CeaseFire to launch a new program designed to help local businesses become “Gun Free Zones.” A Monday press conference to make the announcement is planned.

According to a press release, businesses will be able to opt into the program by visiting the Washington Cease Fire website, signing the pledge to participate, and placing a “Gun Free Zone” decal in their window.

“We are here to support businesses that do not wish to have guns on their premises” McGinn said in the release. “The police department regularly enforces trespass laws when a visitor to a business violates that business’s rules. We will continue to do so, and I thank these businesses for standing up for the safety of their customers.”

Dozens of businesses, including Neumos, Oddfellows, Elliott Bay Books, Cupcake Royale and Café Racer have reportedly signed up to participate.

“We’re making a statement as a community,” Washington CeaseFire Board President Ralph Fascitelli said in the press release. “We know this won’t stop someone determined to cause violence, but we hope that standing together and giving businesses a tool to say no to guns will change the conversation around gun violence. Maybe our message will even make it to Olympia – we need better tools now to stop gun violence in our community.”

Washington CeaseFire says in King County alone, more people die every year from gun violence than from motor vehicle collisions, and between 2007 and 2011, the estimated annual cost of firearms deaths and hospitalizations in King County was $177 million.

How will they know of someone has a gun or not? Are they going to install metal detectors at these establishments? I doubt the armed criminal is going to be very concerned with a misdemeanor trespassing citation when he's sticking up the joint. What a bunch of feel good fluff that doesn't mean anything.

It reminds me of these "Drug Free Zones" I drive by everyday near the schools. I'm sure the drug dealers refuse to operate in those areas thanks to the posted signage.

Maybe. If anything it gives your everyday armed criminal a guidebook on where to go and stick up a place without fear of being shot. I bet they love it. They should come out with a map called the "Armed robbers welcome guide to Seattle"

Correct... I doubt they would pick a police station to shoot up....Just someplace where no guns are allowed. The odds are better.

Criminals are not in the majority. A psycho ignores rules no matter what, but their mentality should not be allowed to rule the status quo. Protecting the weak is foremost IMHO

criminals commit the majority of the crime.I understand a gay might find his partner in bed with another man and in a fit of rage drop them both but a lot crimes are done by people with a former rap sheet. Perhaps they hold up a 7-11 at 2 am 4 or 5 times then things don't work out and someone dies of being shot..
