What matters is current income.

The I-864P Poverty Guidelines are the requirements. His current income is what will be looked at, if the income isn't adequate to meet the requirement then you will need a co-sponsor.

If your current income is above the poverty level, more than likely you will not need a co-sponsor. My previous year tax returns were ALL below poverty level, but I had letters of employment and paystubs that showed my current income was sufficient (above poverty level). I didn't need a co-sponsor.
