but the abusers are not the majority of recipients. and anyone who wants to indefinitely live under the poverty line simply because they do not want to work - probably couldn't maintain in the workforce to begin with.

I don't know about the numbers and what percentage abuse the system. I'm just going on personal experience. The problem as I saw it was that these children were being raised in this environment of living off the govt. and getting by on as little as possible. If that's how your raised, then chances are you'll continue that cycle. I think that has changed somewhat since I was growing up. I think they set limits on benefits etc. now. Which I think is a good thing for the people that were getting assistance. Gives them a a feeling of self worth if they are making their own money etc.

The fact that the govt. isn't paying these folks out of tax revenues and that these people that are now working are generating tax revenue is an added bonus.

Like I said previously, there should be a safety net. It needs to come with conditions though, and it can't be forever.

Walmart isn't the Waltons. Walmart is the shareholders. You should listen more, and speak less. You might learn a thing or two.

The share holders include many of the employees, who buy stock with every paycheck.

Just because I'm not a Republican, doesn't automatically mean I'm a liberal.

No, you are farther left on the spectrum than that.

i think some people will forever be dependent upon the government. there's no way around that.

but i think there definitely needs to be a shift in focus so far as working toward getting off welfare as opposed to losing benefits the second you start to get ahead.

as far as eic goes? that's just straight up b.s. imo. my friend has four kids, she gets like, 7,000$ and while she may use it for her kids clothing throughout the year, school supplies, etc it is kind of crazy to think that giving someone a huge lump sum like that isn't going to be misused a bit. if you're not used to having money all year, but expect a huge payout come every january - there's a tendency to blow through easy money on things that are not necessities.

Being left of the current GOP ideology makes most a 1970's Republican, in fact Ronald Regan wouldn't win one primary under the current party.

Its not the that there are more liberals, its just that the GOP platform moved into the bizzaro world and it's only getting more and more absurd. (yeah, stolen from a song.) :)

The Walton's made about 2.7 BILLION off that company last year, so yes as a majority stake holder I'd say they kinda still own it. I feel terrible that they'll lose a few bucks.

Plenty of people hurt when stock prices go down. Equities are part of every retirement account in America. Even yours.

One of those urban myths. 70% of Walmart workers leave the company in less than 1 year. How much company stock do you think these workers - the vast majority of Walmart workers - actually ever accumulate? That's right - none.

Well yeah you cant show up for work for a few days and expect stock options. You need to show a little commitment. They can't just go handing out stock options to everyone that fills out an application.

Yes, and? The point is that a myth was presented here and it needed to be said that it is just that - a myth. I was not discussing the reasons why employees don't actually become owners. In the case of Walmart, it may have something to do with how that particular company treats employees. I feel sorry for most anyone working there. Really.

So the idea to balance the states budget and cutting social programs inevitably hurts everyone?

That's revealing...

They might rethink the implications of that idea. :)

Yes. Fukcing the poor ends up fukcing us all. The poor spend a larger % of their earnings than the middle class do; the rich spend even less. In an economy driven in large part by consumer spending, keeping the poor spending becomes crucial.

In your words "Urban Myth" If they don't stick around and show commitment, they're not going to get stock options. That's the same for any company that I can think of. Somehow that's Walmart's fault? No one is forcing them to work there
