Oklahoma Senator Inhofe sticks to principle - requires budget cuts in exchange for aid to tornado ravaged community

Oklahoma Republican Sen. Tom Coburn will seek to offset federal aid to victims of a massive tornado that blasted through Oklahoma City suburbs on Monday with cuts elsewhere in the budget.

"That's always been his position [to offset disaster aid]," a spokesman told the Huffington Post Monday night. "He supported offsets to the bill funding the OKC bombing recovery effort."

Coburn, who intends to retire in 2016, joined his fellow Oklahoma Sen. Jim Inhofe ® last year in supporting an amendment that would have substantially cut a package of $60 billion dollars intended for reconstruction of the East Coast in the wake of Superstorm Sandy.

In all honesty, I believe it will. This will only help his tea party cred and thereby his lecture circuit career prospects post-retirement.

Maybe nationally, but I doubt those in Oklahoma will appreciate him trying to find money to help with their situation. Doesn't matter if he plans to retire though.

I think they should have funds set aside for disasters like this. Maybe cut some of the foreign aid and use those funds.

You are an expert on how people in Oklahoma feel about becoming leeches on the rest of the nation?

I would imagine the people in Oklahoma just need help. Not a bean counter trying to figure out where we're going to come up with the money. One of their direct representatives should put his people before an attempt at fiscal responsibility. That can be figured out after the initial aid is given. They're still digging people out, no time for politics.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's his angle. Like you said, he needs post-retirement income.

One of my favorite quotes that seems applicable.

The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.

You might be telling the truth if you pointed out that other Senators tacked on a bunch of other pork spending not related to Sandy relief, but I see you decided to leave that out.
