Pentagon Recognizes Transgender Veteran

The Pentagon formally recognized earlier this month that there are transgender veterans — a step that LGBT advocates say is a long way from open transgender service in the military, but also a significant first step in that process.

In a short letter dated May 2, a Navy official told Autumn Sandeen, a veteran and transgender activist: “Per your request the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) has been updated to show your gender as female effective April 12, 2013.”

Sandeen’s military identification card now reflects the change, a move called “quite significant” by the head of OutServe-SLDN, a national organization for LGBT service members and veterans and their families.

I think they get a lot of those in the Navy. Long Sea Tours and all.. Bet he/She was a former submariner. I am sure Marvin can fill us in .

If they were on a sub back in the day, it's possible. Now they have women on subs, so not so much. My previous LT was on a sub, he used to say 150 men go down, 75 couple come back up.

You'll see on ships this isn't so much of a problem since they have more women serving now. On my last ship, LCC 19 Blue Ridge, we had about 200 women and about 800 men. If you ever watched the reality show Carrier, my old CMC was on there, Master Chief Pendleton. One of the sailors said it best: It's like one hot dog bun to seven hot dogs

I never messed with military women so I wouldn't know personally. Besides, our ship hit way too many cool ports to be sweating some female on the ship whose head inflated to the size of a liferaft because all the young boys would try to get with them. It was a mess, these women wouldn't get a second look in a normal situation so on the ship they were acting like they were supermodels.

It was a mess, these women wouldn't get a second look in a normal situation so on the ship they were acting like they were supermodels.

I got ribbed one time, because when we walked into an Officers Club after just recently arriving on post, the only female in the place walked up and greeted me by my first name.
