B-2 visa... 6months maximum?

My mother in law was just approved for a tourist visa... even though her visa is good for 10yrs, they told her that her length of stay depends on whatever amount of time U.S. customs decides. How am I supposed to buy a rountrip ticket for her to visit if I have no idea how long she can stay until she reaches U.S. soil? Thanks for your help!

She won't get more than 6 months. She could get less.

At a visa interview one of the questions is how long do you plan to stay. What did she say?

They usually give 6mths not more. But be careful that she does not try to stay the whole 6 months! The next time she enters the us after staying a long time (6mths or close to it) she very likely will only be given 1 mth, this means they are watching her usage of the visa. The 6mth given is given then they watch to see if u try to use most of it. if she comes too often or stays too long like over 3 months, they might not even renew her visa after the 10 yr visa is expired. Use the visa wisely... they are watching. Congrats on the visa!

Yes that should be safe enough -- 3 months. Congrats on your first baby. smile.png

Make sure she does not tell the officer that she is here to "help out with the baby" she could be denied entry. Tell him or her she is on vacation and here to visit you and see the USA. Helping out with the baby can be viewed as "working" in the USA.
