the more educated people become? is that what you think is happening in this country?

the majority of people need and want religion in their lives. i'm not sure exactly why, but society shows this is the case. maybe it's because there is no sense of community, one you reach a certain age, outside of church community. i'm not really sure..but comparing race and sex to religion is kind of pointless. you don't choose your sex or race - you do choose your religious association. and politicians best choose wisely.

lemme put it this way, we should see an actual muslim president or buddhist president or hindu president before we see an atheist president. you do know that an atheist candidate for president would literally equate with the antichrist? can you imagine the uproar?

Yes. People will learn about the big bang theory, evolution, etc. and it will become more accepted. General religious doctrine will be seen as myth in the future.

I understand that religion gives people comfort, but I don't think that people will ACTUALLY believe it... I think they will just follow through with traditions like Christmas. Look at Shinto in Japan for an example.

If there was a Buddhist president, he/she would likely be Atheist. I think most western Buddhists don't believe in any gods. Buddhism doesn't teach about the existence or non-existence of God, after all.

I thought you were actually talking about political decisions by the government.

Well, a lot are indirectly. Religion fuels the gay rights, abortion, birth control, school funding for private schools, etc., decisions. Even if the Congressmen/women are not religious themselves, the religious beliefs of his/her constituents will influence the way they vote on issues. I mean, religion is still a huge driving force in this country.

I am the USC/petitioner.

So abortion is illegal?

For many, it is a religious issue. And every presidential candidate has to address their stance on it. They want the president to put pro-life minded justices on the supreme court

As opposed to eastern Buddhists, I suppose. Most Buddhists I have encountered don't discount the mischief caused by lesser gods and practice ancestor worship. Of course that seems to apply to the Catholics from that part of the world I have met as well.

but until then, we still have public schools teaching creationism. the future you speak of, is way out there, long time coming..that's my point. i appreciate your optimism, but i'm don't think it's reality based.

What political decisions have been based on religion?

Oh also, I forgot. The article mentioned the implications of insurance covering birth control.

Abortion.

Abortion is not a religious issue, it is a constitutional issue. We are granted among other things the right to life liberty and the pursuit happiness. The problem with abortion in a strictly legal sense is that there must be a moment in time at which something which was not alive becomes alive. In most cases it is against the law to kill except in defense, war and execution. so then when does it become illegal to kill a fetus? There is only one instant I am aware of where this event horizon occurs.............conception. The law holds this to be true in cases where the fetus' father opts for abortion.

This is the crux of the issue, not religion..

Roe v. Wade only perpetuated the issue as it should have been a constitutional amendment that defined the precise moment in time at which life begins.

If my fiancee happened to be a man, I wouldn't be able to bring him to the U.S. without getting a sex change. The only possible explanation is religion.

There is no same sex fiance or marriage visa. Yet. But as more states recognize same sex marriage, who knows what the Feds will do? When most immigration laws were written same sex marriage wasn't even on the radar.

In California, I think it's not so far away. It really varies by region, I think.

The defense of marriage act was specifically intended to block same-sex marriages at a federal level, was it not?
