Does anyone here by any chance know how to fill out the FAFSA application if our spouses are living outside the US?

If I write that I am married on FAFSA then it asks for our tax return information as a couple, but my husband does not have an US income so I am not even sure what to do. For the 2012 tax return I was claimed as a dependent by my father.

So I contacted a few people and they are giving me two different options:

Option 1: File FAFSA as married then write in that I never filed tax return and then write in my husband's income in US dollars (not sure how this is going to impact my fafsa application). I thought if a Nonresident Alien does not have US income than they are exempt on tax return?! So why do I even have to write his income.

Option 2:File as single and put in my parents tax return information. The problem with this is that I am not single and don't want red flags at the interview process.

I wasn't sure who to ask so I have decided to post this here. Please I need to file this soon and if anyone has any idea then that would be very nice of them to help.

You can fill your fasfa application out as married and listed your husband income is 0 since he haven't worked yet. If you under 25 you are consider as dependent so you have to provide your parent tax info. They does asked for your husband income if he does not work but I think I'm sure you have to provide your dad transcript if he claim you . Here is the problem they might ask for his social security . The law required that you listed anyone income including your spouse or parent so they can estimated how much your aid

If you are married you should be listed as separate than your parents for FAFSA and financial aid purposes, however it is incredibly odd that a married person is filed as a dependent on their parents' tax returns. I got married at 20 and have never since put my parents' tax return information into FAFSA because my mother stopped listing me as a dependent.

Thank you everyone. In the end my father amended his tax return and I filed one for 2012. It solved the entire confusion.

Nola123, the reason my father decided to claim for me is because I had to quit my job back in february since I was pregnant and constantly in and out of the hospital. I was sick for a few months, following a very late miscarriage etc etc. This left me unemployed and he helped me financially through the year. However, we decided to just amend his tax return and file mine.
