It's International Women's Day today, so let's take a look at this map from Lizzie Malcolm and LUSTlab via The Guardian which demonstrates how women's voting rights and roles in the political process of countries around the world have changed over time.

For instance, this is the (bleak) state of the world regarding women's right to vote in 1892:

By 1950 women had the right to vote in far more countries, though not in a large swath of Africa:

And in 2012 women's suffrage is still not universal, but it's a lot better:

Explore the rest of the map, which also examines when female politicians got the right to stand for election and when the first women were elected, here. Clicking on each country also reveals more data:

I picked up on that too. It seems surprising.

Women get their own day? Isn't Valentine's Day and Mother's Day enough? I am not buying the wife anything for a made up day!

It's a nice Socialist holiday for commie pinkos like me. luv.gif

I am celebrating by making dinner for my man. Hey... wait a minute... that doesn't sound quite right.sad.gif

Could be outliers. You would have to see the data for all the years in between to note a trend.

I just found this, and there's more articles out there on the topic. http://www.nbcnews.com/id/20427256/#.UTpNIRxlkxE

Looks like c-sections and rising rates of obesity in the US could be leading to this. :(

Wow, that's crazy. Surprised you don't hear more about it.

And for that matter the subservient FSU women celebrate this as a BIG holiday, special dinner later tonight, gifts, shopping for more gifts Sunday, another dinner out Sunday night. All afternoon and evening party with her RUB girlfriends tomorrow (no doubt she will need a ride home  )

The "liberated" women of the USA...not so much. Most of them never heard of it. Ask a husband of an FSU wife what happens if we forget "women's day"

Do not forget that you must do special things to ALL the women you know or suffer the conquences  . At least I was able to keep the wife and MIL happy this year. My favorite Aunt was too busy to get a call to, so I hope she is not too bent out of shape. Do to the snow storm today, we will go out to dinner later in the week. At least I did get dinner in on Thursday and the flowers on Friday. February 14th means nothing compared to March 8th.

Hope everybody had a good time,

Dave
