Poll: Christie nearing 'rock star' status with 78 percent approval rating

TRENTON — Gov. Chris Christie’s post-Hurricane Sandy performance has propelled him to near “rock star” status, according to a poll released this morning.

The Kean University / NJ Speaks poll of 1,000 likely voters found 78 percent approve of Chrisite – including 70 percent of Democrats.

“The governor is approaching rock star status,” said Dr. Terry Golway, director of the Kean University Center for History, Politics, and Policy.

President Obama is also popular, though not as much as Chrisite. Sixty-six percent approve of him.

The poll also found that 71 percent favor new efforts to ban assault weapons – something Christie has not said whether he supports – while 56 percent said they’d be less likely to vote for a candidate backed by the National Rifle Association.
