Obama expected to pick Hagel for Defense Secretary, neocons prepare all-out war

President Barack Obama is expected to name Chuck Hagel as his choice for defense secretary as early as Monday, as critics of the former Nebraska senator prepare to go to war to fight his expected nomination.

...

Hagel's detractors are moving forward with their campaign against the nomination. That campaign has included anonymous Senate aides calling Hagel an anti-Semite, the Washington Post editorial board writing that, "Chuck Hagel is not the right choice for defense secretary," and the Emergency Committee for Israel running a television ad criticizing Hagel's opposition to unilateral sanctions against Iran.

calling Hagel an anti-Semite,

That term gets so misused! He really must hate the Akkadians, the Phoenicians, the Canaanites, some Ethiopians, and those Aramaean folks.

Oh noez not FP - that "left-wing blog" again

The fight over Hagel has been going on for a while... and it's pretty much The Lobby vs. everyone else.

So far, endorsers of Hagel include:

Zbigniew Brzezinski, former US National Security Advisor

Brent Scowcraft, former US National Security Advisor

Jaes Wolfensohn, former president of the World Bank Group

Paul Volcker, former Chairman of the Federal Reserve

Thomas Pickering, former Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs, former Ambassador to the United Nations, former Ambassador to Israel

Nancy Kassebaum-Baker, former US Senator from Kansas

Gary Hart, former US Senator from Kansas

William J. Fallon, former Centcom Commander

Frank Carlucci, former US Secretary of Defense

Ryan Crocker (former ambassador to Iraq and Afghanistan

J-Street

Jewish Voice for Peace

Israel Policy Forum

Connie Bruck, The New Yorker

James Besser, New York Times (formerly of the Jewish Week)

Thomas Friedman, New York Times

Chris Matthews, MSNBC's Hardball

David Bromwich, Huffington Post

Alon Pinkas, former Israeli Consul General, former Chief of Staff to former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak

Kenneth Feinberg, special master of the September 11th victims' compensation fund

Steve Walt, Harvard University professor of international affairs, co-author of The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy

Opposers of Hagel include:

Sen. Chuck Shumer (D-NY) and self-described Defender of Israel

Joe Lieberman, former Senator (D/I-CT)

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC)

Bill Kristol, angry neocon, Weekly Standard

Jennifer Rubin, even angrier neocon, Washington Post

Abraham Foxman, Anti-Defamation League

Morton Klein, president, Zionist Organization of America

Rachel Maddow, MSNBC

Bret Stephens, Wall Street Journal

Log Cabin Republicans

Christians United For Israel

AIPAC of course

(Those are just the short lists; there are many more.)

Note that there are some neo-cons on the "pro-Hagel" list.

Some people may be wondering ####### are the Log Cabin Republicans doing on that list ? Of course the LCR (a pro-gay conservative group) recently took out a full-age ad in the New York Times slamming Hagel for being "anti-gay" (even after endorsing people like Sarah Palin and Mitt Romney without a peep about their anti-gay ideology.)

But now, after questions from Glenn Greenwald about where the LCR got the money for that kind of thing (that ad likely cost well over $100K,) LCR reveals that it was funded by "a number of donors" who they declined to name. The next day, the executive director of LCR abruptly resigned.

If Hagel is the pick and is indeed confirmed, we may well be on the verge of a new era of US foreign policy in the Middle East.

And if that appointment does indeed come to pass, you can thank The Lobby, Netanyahu, Likud-Beiteinu, and the illegal Jewish settlers for their obstinance, arrogance and insolence which have finally pushed the US to switch up the program.

That's the reason I think he will be nominated. And if Harry has somehow grown a set over the holidays, confirmation should be a non issue.

About time, ain't it? Bowing to that lobby hasn't furthered the peace process. It's done the opposite, really. Only the insane do the same thing over and over expecting a different result. Sane people recognize failure and change course.

It's actually a clever pick for Obama. He is free to let Hagel be the front man for any crazy initiative the Obama advisers can come up with, giving Chuck all the rope he wants. If he succeeds, Obama can claim all the credit, and if he fails, Obama can yank him back, and lay all the blame at his feet. Obama can't loose. I have watched company commanders and battalion commanders do the same to junior officers, and senior nco's. Great entertainment when things get too routine.

It doesn't matter what he does or doesn't do, or how much money or weapons he gives Israel. To The Lobby, Barak Hussein Obama is always a Jihad-lovin' crypto-Muslim who kisses the ring of the Saudis and is helping build the Caliphate for the ultimate holy war to exterminate the infidels.
