Chicago's downtown parking meters to charge $6.50 an hour, most expensive in nation

Associated Press – 6 hrs ago

CHICAGO (AP) -- Chicago soon will have the nation's most expensive downtown parking meters.

On New Year's Day, meters in the city's downtown Loop area will begin charging $6.50 an hour — up from $5.75.

A report from the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency says the rate change will make Chicago the city with the most expensive metered parking.

The company that operates the meters plans to have all machines set to new rates by the end of February.

Former Mayor Richard Daley got the City Council to approve the company's 75-year contract in 2008. In return, the city got a $1.1 billion payment — much of which has already been spent.

Current Mayor Rahm Emanuel has ordered an independent audit of the deal, which is now largely viewed as a financial disaster.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Seems like they could have spent 1.1 billion on free parking to encourage people to locate and do business in Chicago. What business will locate in a place that has 6.50 an hour parking. Dems never fail to figure a way to kill business and jobs.

FREE Parking Downtown Fort Worth after 6p every weekday and FREE all weekend long. Business is booming here thanks to that and many other improvements thanks to the Sundance association. The difference, Downtown Fort Worth is on privately owned land, NOT public.

moochers.

oh yes, generating millions of dollars in private revenue makes the citizens moochers.... Not to mention the tax dollars that are made there each and every day thanks to the popularity.

Not to mention all of the other events throughout out the year that bring in tens of thousands of extra people who are tourists who don't have to worry about spending money on parking and can help local businesses.
