Does anyone know how case numbers are assigned?

Does anyone know how case numbers are assigned? I read in another topic where people were looking at cases close to theirs to see where they were at. I am a 12/4 date. Went back 100 numbers from my case and found I130 cases from both 12/4 and 12/5. The 12/5's just seemed mixed in between the 12/4.. I expected to see 12/4's than 12/3's but not 12/5's . It just makes me wonder how the case numbers are assigned

they're probably assigned in the order they're received. Currently they are not adjudicated in that order, but assigned their receipt number, probably.

Moved from IR-1/CR-1 Progress Reports to USCIS Service Centers forum; topic is about USCIS operations and not a personal case status update.
