Hoffa predicts 'civil war' in Michigan

(CNN) - Jimmy Hoffa, president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, said Tuesday he expects Michigan unions and lawmakers to break out into "civil war" after the state legislature passed right-to-work bills that would weaken unions' power.

"This is just the first round of a battle that's going to divide this state. We're going to have a civil war," Hoffa said on CNN's "Newsroom."

Good. Burn that place down, say no to the plutocracy.

Is there anything left to burn south of 8 mile or east of Telegraph?

It's not sour grapes because your victory isn't complete. You see, this particular "war" (metaphorically speaking) isn't over yet.

24 down, 26 more to go.

I don't understand how average folk continue to celebrate their being screwed over by the oligarchy. Makes no sense unless one really is that masochistic.

Right to work states are doing better than the other states. That might have something to do with it.

They are? I live in one and I assure you that this state is NOT doing better than than, say, NY which is similar in size to this state.

Looking at per capita GDP, there are 19 states and D.C. above the US average of $47,482.00 and 31 states below that national average. Out of the 20 entities that outperform the national average only 6 are Right to Work states - a clear minority. Out of the 31 states below the national average, 18 are Right to Work states - a clear majority. Looking at it another way, 13 out of the bottom 20 states are Right to Work states - an overwhelming majority - while only 6 out of the top 20 are right to work - a small minority.

I must ask again, just how are Right to Work states doing better?

I would guess that the cost of living is lower in in right to work states, hence the salaries are lower as well.

Facts and history demonstrate that right-to-work laws are just as important to a state’s economic competitiveness as a sound and hospitable business tax climate. From 2000 to 2008, approximately 4.7 million Americans moved from forced-union states to right-to-work states, according to a Cato Journal study by economist Richard Vedder.

Right-to-work states are indeed witnessing greater prosperity. Between 1977 and 2007, per capita income rose 23 percent faster in right-to-work states than in non-right-to-work-states.

The advantages don’t end there. Right-to-work states outperform non-right-to-work states in practically every metric of economic health, according to National Institute for Labor Relations Research data, from lower unemployment rates to greater after-tax purchasing power and beyond.
