My wife passed her citizenship interview. However, on the day of the interview, interviewer asked her "where is your husband"? "is here today?" My wife said no. So, after passing the interview, interviewer asked that my wife bring her husband (me) to the oath ceremony. Has anyone been asked this? Is this required for the Oath Ceremony to have your spouse present? Do you folks know what they will ask the husband on the day of the ceremony? I am confused...why would they need me on the day of oath ceremony? are they going to interview me too?

was it one of those 3 year span thingies?

if so, that's based on marriage,

with a spouse,

another human .

if the 5 year span thingie, I say that's a weird question.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Yea, my wife got naturalized by a marriage to US Citizen and she applied for citizenship after 3 years of marriage with US Citizen.

But more imporatantly, has anyone been asked to take a spouse if a citizenship is based on marriage to US Citizenship. I have never heard it before and he specifically requested my spose to bring me.....???

My husband was with me for the interview and the oath. While he wasn't allowed into the interviewing room, the IO did glance where he was sitting and commented on him while she was ushering me in from the waiting area.

My wife's IO wouldn't even return my hello, my feelings, since my name was on every piece of documentation, and also subject to questions, I should have been with her to explain that evidence.

That's exactly the opposite of what your wife experienced, all dependent on that one IO you are either lucky or unlucky to get. Still weird with the USCIS only having one person determining the outcome of this key interview. This is a certification process and with any other governmental agency that requires certification, you meet with a broad, not one individual person.

Then I cannot help feel there is a racial bias, it is a well known fact that Blacks and Asians in our neck of the woods do no like Hispanics. Guess what, my wife's IO was Black and my stepdaughter's IO was Asian. Hispanic is not a race, but a culture, both my wife and stepdaughter had imposed delays for the most ridiculous reasons.

But fortunately, my senators immigration head was also Hispanic, she straightened out these problems in a hurry, with an apology from the office manager. Wife was given a special oath ceremony just three days after I called, St. Paul just doesn't do that. Stepdaughter received a notice in two weeks.

I would not worry too much about it. But it would be nice to have the family and friends present at your oath ceremony as it is a memorable day in your life. Not every day you would become an USC. Congrats for your approval and have a wonderful time at your oath ceremony.

Generally, if you are invited to an oath ceremony it's because you are approved, so maybe the interviewer was simply giving his advice. Did the interviewer say he was recommending your wife for approval? If so, all you can do now is wait for the oath letter. And don't worry about it too much.

If she is applying based on marriage (3-yr rule) they may ask that you be produced at some point.

Plan on attending the ceremony for it is one of the most important dates for any naturalized US citizen and I am sure your wife would expect to share it with you.

if she was recommended for approval then I'm positive the IO was only saying that to remind her that oaths are important events open to your family and friends, and that she shouldn't forget to bring you (while it's not required for the spouse to accompany applicants to the interview, many who apply by marriage do, just as a matter of support, so he might've just wanted to remind her that oath is the place to bring her spouse)

A naturalization journey/process is completed alone, even if an application is filed based on 3 years rule on the basis of marrying with a US citizen. What it means is- US citizen spouse couldn't be asked to present together with alien-spouse, not at the interview nor at the Oath. A naturalization process is an individual basis. When a naturalization application is based on 3 years rule then it's a law that marriage must be going good, which why USCIS wants to make sure that applicant is still in a marital relationship which makes them to ask to produce documentary evidences. Presence of US citizen spouse wouldn't make much difference. Recently, just two weeks ago, my wife appeared for naturalization interview and I was with her. Officer didn't want to even look at me and even when wife asked her if I could go with her, officer gave nasty look. As for the Oath Ceremony in NYC then friends/family are not even allowed in the room where Oath is conducted, but they can watch the oath ceremony on the tv monitor which is located on another floor in the courthouse. So I don't understand if US citizen spouse would make any difference here.

I think officer was just simply talking and not serious when he asked OP wife to bring her husband to the Oath because if officer would have any doubt about the marriage then officer had not approved the application at first place; rather would have asked to produce all kinds of evidences...let alone talking about the Oath. Her application is already approved and officer was just taking the jabs or trying to have conversation. That's all. Nothing to worry at all.

By the way, there is nothing special or important about the Oath ceremony, at least to me. Maybe it is important to others, but not to me. I was getting so bored and praying when all that gets over so that I could get the hell out of there. It was so time consuming and boring that I couldn't explain. Wasted 3 hours just to have 2 seconds oath !!!! But naturalization interview was very special and important because my whole immigration life was depend on it and I spent years preparing for that interview, but there was nothing special about the oath ceremony to me. Maybe I'm different than others.

When I was taking an oath, many many years ago (in Philadelphia) family members were allowed and encouraged to be present.

As far back as 4 years ago I was with my sister when she was taking an oath.

It's just nice and common for family members to be present during this event.

As far as OP: I think it was just a mere suggestion for the spouse to be present.
