Hello all!

Need some advice...

My Fiance had his interview for the K-1 Visa in Madrid. It was approved. Yay!

But he said he did not have to complete Part II of form DS-230. I wanted him to complete Part II questions 43A and 43B, so that the Social Security Admin(SSA) would automatically be notified of his approved K-1 Visa and he would receive a Social Security card(SScard) within 3 weeks of arriving here. <<details on SSA website - this site wouldn't allow me to post the direct link>>

Has anyone else experienced this? Can he mail in Part II or complete the online version (DS-260) so that he will automatically receive his SScard?

I am nervous about timing... waiting for a SScard so that we can get married and then filling for an Adjustment of Status. Eek!

Thank you! And good luck to all!

What state are you in? I didn't need a SSN to get married in Florida. I'm Canadian, though.

To the best of my knowledge SS cards are not generated automatically. Immigration has a database that SS accesses after the K1 enters the country, but you still need to apply in person and fill out a short form.

Why does it state that you can request one in question 43 of the DS-230, then?

Your fiance did the correct thing. The DS-230 Part II is ONLY for spouses. As a K1 you have to got the SSA.

Why does it state that you can request one in question 43 of the DS-230, then?

because that's for spouses. It applies to you, not to the OP.

**Edit - it's not needed to apply for a marriage license. A lot of sites mention it, but once you go in person they'll tell you the passport/birth cert is enough. That's how foreigners can get married here.

That does not apply to K-1 applicants. You will still have to go to your local SSA office to get SSN.

Not sure about other locales.

However, this was our experience in Washington State:

My wife (then fiancee) had her POE at SeaTac airport on 26 July 2012. She and her son were able to clear CBP after two hours, we rushed down to the King County Recorder's Office in downtown Seattle right before closing time. The clerk asked for our IDs, she furnished her Chinese passport, I furnished by WA State driver's license and $64 cash. We had to fill out some forms, SSNs are NOT required in Washington State. We received our marriage license, however there is a 3-day waiting period until it is valid for use. We were married on 30 July 2012. The rest is history.

http://www.kingcounty.gov/courts/marriage/Applyingforamarriagelicense.aspx

It then took her six weeks to receive her SSN, but then that is another story, refer to our threads in the VJ Social Security sub-forum for details.

Good luck on your visa journey.
