I am applying for yet another job with a school board. I printed out the application and in one section it states to "list at least three current references capable of assessing your ability to perform the work for which you are applying". Here is the problem. I have not worked in over 3 1/2 years now (since June 2002). My work experience has all been in Canada. I am only able to give one reference as I have been unable to get a hold of the other two. Out of the other two, one was only a character reference only. I'm assuming in this case, they want someone that knows of my work experience? Has seen me on the job? I have two character references state side but that's it. If you were me, would you then use that work reference from Canada and the two state side? I don't know what else I can do. Obviously this school board would check with previous employers to see how well I worked.

Thanks.... :(

I would use the Canadian work reference, since that's where you worked before. And also the character references you mentioned. They'll check them all anyways (I would imagine) since it's a school based job. I've just spent the day writing my Philosophy of Teaching, so my head is absolutely boggled!! Sorry I can't help ya more :)

I would agree with putting the Canadian ones. You can always give them an explanation of your situation on there if you can only come up with two. Good luck on getting the job!

I would use the references you have. There is a chance that this wont be enough and you will get passed over for the job. You might look into volunteering a little doing similar things in order to gain those references.

I agree with this. Though you might be passed over (depends on other applicants too) you could definately build references for next one volunteering at a day care/after school care site. It would at least be a start to build references here.

I didn t have references from US employers when i looked for a job.

I volunter in a museum and got my first reference.

I worked for the same place for 4 years in Ireland.

Also worked for different buisness or they changed owner or they went out of buisness...

Voluntering will helpyouto get references
