WASHINGTON (AP) — Racial attitudes have not improved in the four years since the United States elected its first black president, an Associated Press poll finds, as a slight majority of Americans now express prejudice toward blacks whether they recognize those feelings or not.

Those views could cost President Barack Obama votes as he tries for re-election, the survey found, though the effects are mitigated by some people's more favorable views of blacks.

Racial prejudice has increased slightly since 2008 whether those feelings were measured using questions that explicitly asked respondents about racist attitudes, or through an experimental test that measured implicit views toward race without asking questions about that topic directly.

In all, 51 percent of Americans now express explicit anti-black attitudes, compared with 48 percent in a similar 2008 survey. When measured by an implicit racial attitudes test, the number of Americans with anti-black sentiments jumped to 56 percent, up from 49 percent during the last presidential election. In both tests, the share of Americans expressing pro-black attitudes fell.

"As much as we'd hope the impact of race would decline over time ... it appears the impact of anti-black sentiment on voting is about the same as it was four years ago," said Jon Krosnick, a Stanford University professor who worked with AP to develop the survey.

Most Americans expressed anti-Hispanic sentiments, too. In an AP survey done in 2011, 52 percent of non-Hispanic whites expressed anti-Hispanic attitudes. That figure rose to 57 percent in the implicit test. The survey on Hispanics had no past data for comparison.

The AP surveys were conducted with researchers from Stanford University, the University of Michigan and NORC at the University of Chicago.

Experts on race said they were not surprised by the findings.

"We have this false idea that there is uniformity in progress and that things change in one big step. That is not the way history has worked," said Jelani Cobb, professor of history and director of the Institute for African-American Studies at the University of Connecticut. "When we've seen progress, we've also seen backlash."

So a nation that is over 70 white elected a mixed race President four years ago but when he loses this time it's because he is black. This might be the most reacted thing you have ever posted and that is a stretch

Assuming the methodology is accurate, it seems our young President has not accomplished another of his campaign promises, that is to improve the relationship between those that identify themselves as Black and those that identify them as White. According to the OP, the President has actually made matters worse, which could be expected when you constantly one pit group against another, based on race, gender, religion, nationality, sexual preference, income level, or political party. This has been the most divisive President in my lifetime, by far. For someone of mixed race and heritage, articulate, and skilled, he showed such promise, over a senile old crackpot, when I voted for him in 2008.

Not surprised by this poll in the least. Obama is by far the most racist president in my life time. He plays the race game all the time and this is what you get. He's one step above Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton in my book and that's not saying much.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

I'm sure the same was said of Lincoln back in the day. whistling.gif

You fail to understand that prejudice exists within all of us. This study focused on racial prejudice where the subject was not even aware of their prejudice. We are conditioned by permeating stereotypes and the best thing you can do is recognize that prejudice within yourself and break it down using logic and reason. For example, if you live in a predominantly Black neighborhood and the crime rate is high, you might have the tendency to correlate crime to the Blacks, but that's neither scientific, nor rational.

Obama is hardly the caliber of Lincoln.

That's a different argument and something for historians to discuss. You accuse the President of being divisive by standing up for gay rights. Lincoln stood up against the slavery of Blacks. Both issues were divisive for their time, and marked an historical turning point for this country.

When does he play the race card? He has carried himself in a civil and respectful manner with everything that was thrown at him. I'm glad he had the decorum to deal with it, the average person might not have been so lucky.

And he is way better than both Al and Jesse, they both ran and no one voted for them...

Do you think I just fell off the last box car? Seriously. I'm 48 years old and have been following the news for as long as I can remember and that includes when Walter Cronkite was doing the news. Try someone else with that but please spare me.

Its laughably absurd when White people claim reverse racism. Prejudice exists withing all of us - no exceptions, but institutional racism that has permeated in this country for such a long time that the repercussions continue today as this poll indicates. It was only 40 years ago that in many states, it was illegal for a Black man to marry a White woman, or for him to attend school at an all White college. Dr. J (Julius Erving) remembers his early days in the NBA where there hotels that he and his Black teammates were not allowed to stay in while on the road. The South is still riddled with racism and with groups like the neo-nazi's and the KKK, who refuse to accept an integrated society where Blacks are on equal ground with White folk. That's the reality of race in America and it will probably take another century or two before we no longer see people wearing hoods and burning crosses.
