Yes, you need to postpone your trip until you have your US passport. All US citizens are required to present a US passport when they 'return' to the US and since you are a US citizen derived through your mother's citizenship, you are required to use a US passport to enter the US. The good news is that they cannot deny you entry to the US and you don't have to provide prof of ties to Canada to visit your boyfriend. You will also not need a visa to enter the US in order to live - but you do need a US passport. So, plan to travel to the US for however long you want - after you get your passport back.

Returning to Canada you can use either your US or your Canadian passport - although your Canadian passport will show that you cannot be denied entry to Canada either for any reason.
